During the hot spring and summer months, it’s likely that you use your AC very often. Because you rely on it to stay cool and comfortable indoors, isn’t it only fair that it gets a little TLC every once in a while? Maintenance will allow a professional to check all the parts of your cooling system and make sure that they are working properly. By having your AC professionally tuned-up every year, you are actively protecting it from breaking down when you need it the most. Here are some other benefits of routine maintenance:

Benefits of Routine Maintenance

  • Improved energy efficiency. When it comes to the appliances and equipment that you use in your home, you should want them to be as energy efficient as possible. A yearly inspection will help keep your cooling system working properly and efficiently.
  • Extended lifespan. If you’re trying to get the most out of your cooling system, professional tune-ups along the way are key. With every inspection, your system will be fully checked for broken parts, wear and tear, and any other areas of concern. Problems will be resolved before they have the chance to escalate and cause your AC to die young.
  • Better air quality. Any AC that isn’t working properly or efficiently can lessen the quality of your indoor air. Allergens, dust, pet dander, and other contaminates can build up in your AC or duct system. When they get released into your air supply, they can cause asthma symptoms to worsen, as well as other breathing related illnesses to pop up. During a tune-up, the filter will be changed and any built up debris will be cleared out.
  • Less repairs in the future. One of the biggest benefits of a yearly tune-up and inspection for your AC is that it lessens the likelihood of serious issues and major repairs down the road. Any problem that’s left unnoticed can escalate rapidly, causing a breakdown in the near future. To prevent potentially costly repairs, you need to schedule professional maintenance.

6 Reasons to Get Boiler Maintenance Before the Winter

  • Heating
new-boiler

November is just about over and the first snow of the season will be arriving any day now. If your home’s heating appliances haven’t gotten their pre-season maintenance done, now is the time to do it! Owning a boiler or any other heating system means you need to give it regular maintenance every couple of seasons. It’s especially important to service them before the winter so your boiler won’t break down in the middle of the seasons. Having the experts at Pack-Timco maintain your boiler can make your winter much more comfortable.

Here are six reasons to get boiler maintenance from Pack-Timco professionals:

Improved reliability and energy efficiency

Over time, appliances and systems, even inactive ones, will become worn down and less efficient. Inefficient appliances use more energy to provide the same results and are more prone to breaking down. Giving your boiler regular maintenance will keep it running its best and reduce the risk of breakdowns.

Improved boiler lifespan

Any sort of heating system is a major financial investment, and it’s one you won’t want to make frequently. Regular maintenance is a key step to maximizing your boiler’s lifespan. Boilers that get professional maintenance regularly tend to last ten to fifteen years.

Cheaper energy costs

Reducing any system’s running cost is useful, but it’s especially helpful for boilers. The average boiler goes right behind HVAC systems as the biggest annual energy user in most homes. Regular maintenance is capable of keeping your boiler efficient, lowering its running costs. On average, you can cut 10% off your energy bills through regular boiler maintenance.

Obey local safety laws

Since neglected boilers are a safety hazard, you’ll often have local laws about getting regular maintenance. To avoid fines, you’ll need to call a company like ours to ensure your boiler is in good condition.

Maintain the warranty

Because they tend to be more complex, boilers and other systems tend to have warranty stipulations. These are special conditions that can void the warranty if the user breaks them. A common stipulation for boilers requires you get regularly get professional maintenance. Getting the professional maintenance you need can help you pay for repairs in the event of a breakdown.

Protection from gasses and explosions

Boilers provide heat to your home when they run, but they also emit deadly and odorless carbon monoxide. To counter this, boilers have an exhaust pipe that safely vents the gas. Letting your boiler get into bad shape means you risk letting carbon monoxide into your home. Also, it’s not unheard of for defective boilers to explode, so regular maintenance is important.

5 Benefits of Regular Furnace Maintenance

5 Benefits of Regular Furnace Maintenance

  • Heating
furnace maintenance in Connecticut by Pack-Timco

Winter is almost here, and with it comes icy New England weather. It’s not uncommon to see winter temperatures hit the negatives while people stay in their homes. That’s why you should call a company like Pack-Timco to get professional furnace maintenance. Even in New England, furnaces spend many months as inactive dust collectors, and you’ll need to ensure yours still works when you need it. Getting your furnace in good condition will let you enjoy the New England winter without freezing.

Here are five reasons you should get furnace maintenance from Pack-Timco

Keep your furnace energy-efficient

According to the Department of Energy, about half of a furnace owner’s energy usage comes from using the furnace. Regular furnace maintenance can help you keep that number from creeping up. Keeping your furnace healthy prevents inefficiency, which will cause it to use more energy to heat your home. On average, an energy-efficient furnace is about 30% cheaper to run.

Have a long-lasting furnace

Keeping your appliances healthy is a great way to maximize their lifespan and avoid paying for replacements. Furnaces are more prone to breaking down or flat-out dying if they aren’t well-maintained. By getting regular furnace maintenance, you can keep your furnace around for around fifteen years.

Prevent gas leaks

In New England, a healthy furnace is important, but it’s especially important if it runs on gas. Neglected gas furnaces can start leaking carbon monoxide, which is deadly and odorless. Worn-down gas furnaces can also leak flammable gasses that could cause house fires.

Avoid paying for more repairs

Keeping your furnace healthy isn’t free, but it costs less than an entirely new furnace or major furnace repairs. Regular furnace maintenance can help you find any problems with your furnace and solve them before they cause major damage. Nipping these problems in the bud allows you to avoid expensive repairs or shopping trips for a new furnace.

Determine your furnace’s age

Many homeowners won’t have an exact idea of their furnace’s age unless they bought it themselves. Luckily, professional furnace maintenance can help you with that. Our maintenance appointments can help you get an idea of how old your furnace is and if it might need to be replaced. If your furnace is close to retirement, a new furnace may be the best decision. A furnace that’s been well-cared for can last around fifteen years, so keep that in mind when deciding to replace yours.

4 Steps to Properly Shut Down Your AC

4 Steps to Properly Shut Down Your AC

  • Cooling
ac shut down in Connecticut by Pack-Timco

There are two months left until winter hits, and homeowners should be preparing for the coming storms. Winter brings snow, and it can damage your AC condenser if not properly protected. However, if you know how to properly shut down your AC, you can protect it from the snow and avoid having to pay for a repair or replacement. Here, you can learn what you need to do to safeguard your AC this winter.

Here are the four steps required to properly shut down your AC for the winter:

Repair your AC if it needs it

Before you start, you should ensure your AC and condenser are in good condition. Check them both over and call us if they need repairs. You should also ensure the filters don’t need replacing and the seals are tight. Allowing preexisting AC damage to linger over the winter is a bad idea.

Disconnect your condenser’s power

When shutting down your AC, you must disconnect the condenser from your home’s electricity. Condensers with power can sometimes turn themselves on if there’s a warm spell during the winter. If this happens, it can take damage from sucking in snow and ice. Disconnecting the power requires you to shut off the breaker switch for the AC. The switch is often near the condenser under a flip-up lid or on the side of the house. Remember that your AC can’t function at all while the switch is off, so remember to turn it back on in the spring.

Clean up the condenser

Now that the condenser has no power, you should give it some last-minute cleaning. Grab a broom and sweep away any branches and other debris on or around the condenser. Next, use your hose to clean off the outside cabinet by giving it a low-pressure spray. While it dries, give the condenser one last look-over for damage. If you notice any, let a professional know next time you work with one.

Cover it up

When your condenser finishes drying, cover it with a waterproof tarp. You can find one at your local hardware store, along with the bungee ropes you’ll need to secure it. A waterproof tarp is an acceptable replacement, as long as it can completely cover the condenser.
